For the past few months I’ve been really focusing on what I can do to reduce the amount of waste my household creates. I have always been very passionate about the environment and environmental protection (I have a degree in Geography and Environmental Studies, so the environment is very close to my heart), so reducing our waste seemed like an obvious first step.
I started to notice how many bottles of shampoo and conditioner that my husband and I were going through in a year. I figured there must be a way to help cut down on all that plastic going into the landfil. After a little bit of research online I ended up on Lush‘s website. I already knew they had awesome bath products, but I had no idea about all the new hair, body and face products they were coming out with. As a company Lush is also very passionate about recycling, ethical buying/production, animal welfare, ocean conservation and human/indigenous rights. If you want to read more about causes close to their hearts you can check out the Stories tab on their webpage.
The main thing that caught my eye were the shampoo and conditioner bars. The next day Layton and I made a trip to our local Lush store to check them out in person (I always prefer buying things in person rather than online). We ended up purchasing the Honey I Washed My Hair Shampoo Bar, the Sugar Daddy-O Conditioner Bar and some Boom toothpaste tablets. The toothpaste tabs were a bit of a spur of the moment purchase, we figured although they were packaged in plastic it was a lot less plastic than a tube of toothpaste. Also Layton thought they would be perfect for us to use when we travel or go camping. We also purchased travel tins for the shampoo and conditioner bars for around $3.50 a piece.
Now let’s get into the review!
Honey I Washed My Hair Shampoo Bar
We both loved this shampoo bar! It’s so easy to use, lathers up easily, leaves your hair/scalp feeling super clean and makes your hair so shiny! The only negative about this shampoo bar is that it’s almost too harsh for my hair. I find that my hair gets oily much faster when I use this bar compared to a regular bottle shampoo. That’s a negative for me because I try to only wash my hair twice a week and I have to use a lot more dry shampoo between washes. However that could just be this specific bar/formula, I will test out a different bar next time and see if the same thing happens. Overall it’s an awesome product, it smells amazing and I would definitely recommend it!
Sugar Daddy-O Conditioner Bar
To be honest, I really didn’t like this conditioner at first. I found it incredibly difficult to get any product to come off the bar. After the shampoo bar lathered so easily, I struggled with the conditioner bar. After a little while I finally got the hang of it though, and now I love it! The best way to use this is so rub the bar directly on your scalp and rub the end of your hair between your hand and the bar. It definitely takes a bit more work but it’s a really nice conditioner. It makes my hair super soft and silky, which is exactly what I want from a conditioner.
Since it is a purple bar it is supposed to help keep brassy tones out of blonde hair. I feel like it definitely does help a little bit, however it’s not nearly as affective as most traditional purple conditioners.
Over all I would definitely recommend this contitioner bar. It works beautifully and makes your hair so silky. I’m definitely going to try a few other conditioner bars from Lush in the future.
Boom Toothy Tabs (Bonus Review)
We both really enjoy these toothy tabs! They are so simple to use and leave your mouth feeling super clean. I also swear that it has also made my morning breath way better. When you first break this product up between your teeth it is definitely a strong taste but it disipates quickly and has little to no aftertaste. I definitely would recommend these as a toothpaste alternative. They are the perfect size for traveling or camping, but are also great for everyday use!
